2017 Chicago Marathon Training: Week Three

I’m only three weeks into training, but so far it is just flying by. Week three brought the continuation of the summer heat. It was in the 70s in the morning during the week, but a nice breeze helped a little bit with that. On Monday, I finally got my butt to the track for my interval training. I actually did the workout slightly incorrect (whoops) because it was a ladder workout and I started with too long of a distance, but despite that, I was happy with how it went.

The workout I was most anticipating for week three was actually my Wednesday tempo. During the run, I was supposed to run three consistent miles at a pace of which I don’t think I have ever run consecutively before! I was interested to see how it would go but also went into it with reasonable expectations. I ran mostly by effort given the weather. I actually only ended up being an average of 12 seconds per mile below my goal pace for those three miles. The second fast mile was really tough though, and I ended up having to stop at the top of a few hills. Between Monday’s interval work and all of the legwork we did in my strength class the day before, I could tell during my warm up mile that I was really going to be feeling it on the hills. I got to do two cool down miles on this one, and I really let myself take it easy on those.

Saturday was HOT. I went out to meet my group for a 6 am early start time and it was already about 83 degrees with a “feels like” temperature of 88.  Yuck. Luckily the route we ran on Saturday was pretty shady. Despite having directions with me, I chose to follow one of our coaches – but she ended up missing a turn and taking us on an extra mile. I ended up with 13 miles instead of 12 and even though that’s not anything crazy, it wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do on such a hot day after such a demanding week. My legs were done and I was more than happy to take it easy the rest of the day.

Week four is a cutback week and the temperatures are looking way better so it will be a great week to recover a little.

Other fun things this weekend – my husband worked pretty much all day on Saturday, so we decided to have a “day date” on Sunday. We started with brunch at a local restaurant that I like and then visited two of the local breweries. My sister, brother-in-law, and friend ended up meeting us at the second brewery and then coming over afterward for pizza and some more drinks on our porch. It was a nice way to end the weekend.

June is wrapping up and training is about to really pick up. I’m ready to take on these next few weeks and work my butt off.

Nice job on that tempo run! Tempo runs are always so tough for me because there’s no relief until the end of the tempo miles, unlike the regular relief from intervals. Long runs in major heat–I know it’s coming my way, but OOF. I guess we need to remember the saying that fall PRs are made in the summer.

    1. Thanks. When it’s so hot I totally take breaks when I need them during tempo runs, but once the cooler weather comes around it feels so amazing to be able to stick to it all the way through!
